On October 4, the University of Montevallo’s literary magazine, The Tower, held their first poetry reading of the year at the Student Retreat.

Audience members were able to mingle with the poets before the reading while junior communication studies major, Mary Light, provided a musical accompaniment, playing various classical selections on violin.

Ana Nichols, art editor for The Tower, was excited for the reading, seeing as she focuses more on the visual elements of the magazine that she isn’t able to appreciate the poetry and prose that is submitted.

The editor of The Tower, Ryann Taylor, was glad to give the poets a forum to read their work aloud and is looking forward to the next reading, slated for November. The reading will have a “murder-mystery” theme and Taylor plans to open it up to student musicians to expand it to an open mic.

The two recited works of the evening came from the magazine’s first round of accepted submissions for the magazine’s website. Donovan Cleckley’s poem “Blindness”, a lilting free verse, flowed smoothly into Chelsea Yates’ lightheartedly teasing “Private Eyes.”

The magazine’s second round of submissions is open until November 6. Students interested should submit their work through OrgSync, following all submission guidelines. Follow The Tower on Facebook for updates on future readings.
