The University of Montevallo created a new committee to address campus-wide parking concerns. The committee met earlier in the semester and is currently in its research phase.

As enrollment rises, parking could become more difficult for UM drivers.

Chadd Adams, UM Chief of Police, is heading the committee.

You can walk from one side our campus to the other in five minutes, so we really have it good it’s just a matter of where people want to park,” said Adams

“You’re not going to be able to park at the front door if you come in late but a parking issue and a parking concern common on campuses but I still think we’re far better off than most.

Also, on the committee is Student Government President, Lizbeth Juarez.

“Over the years it’s increasing (enrollment) and in the future, it’s definitely going to affect the university so I think right now they are taking advantage of taking care of this problem that it’s not so urgent but it still is an important issue,” said Juarez.

The committee will visit other schools parking setups, use drones to map UM’s campus for the optimal use of space, and survey campus drivers.

“We understand that we grow we build things that parking is a concern but again in the big scheme of things we have good parking here,” said Adams.

“We can go to extremes that’s not what we want to do. Some Universities don’t let freshmen drive. I don’t necessarily think we want to do that. Some universities put the freshman in an outlying area and I don’t know that we want to do that,” said Adams.

When school starts back in January there will be some new faces and some UM drivers.

If you have an issue with parking reach out to your SGA Senate Representative to share your concerns or comment below.

Do you think changes need to be made to UM’s campus parking?

Do you think freshmen should be restricted from driving?

Would you pay more for better parking?
