Over the past year, citizens of Montevallo have been dodging the construction on Main St. Soon all of that will be over and we will finally have our completed streetscape.
Some of the last minute additions you will be seeing are new handrails, cross walk striping, and banners. There are also a few places of pavement that need to be patched up, but the project is almost done.
The streetscape project’s purpose was to beautify downtown while bringing in and boost our local businesses. The new landscaping and side walks have made such an improvement and we have already seen some businesses taking off in the past year.
Mayor Hollie Cost mentioned a new restaurant that is interested in joining Main St. She is hoping this will be able to take place of one of the empty buildings in town.
Another important reason for the new streetscape is for better accessibility for everyone. The sidewalks are now wheelchair accessible and helps out a lot of citizens, like Linda Rutledge get access to downtown.
Rutledge said that she appreciates the new sidewalks because it lets her get around town easier.
Along with all these great additions, one more thing to add is new exteriors on the buildings. There will be new awnings and new paint jobs on the outside of most of the buildings. This will hopefully attract more customers to the businesses and restaurants.
Mayor Cost explained that the new additions will make things ‘pop.’
But as things come to a close on Main St, construction on Middle St is just getting started. Mayor Cost says that this is a separate project and it will be extending a little longer.
She feels that the new downtown area is a more accurate representation of the community now, and it is putting a ‘new face’ on the town.
