There are plenty of upcoming graduating seniors that are unsure of their plans after graduation. Getting good grades in classes is stressful enough, but adding the problems of finding a job and looking into graduate school onto that it can make someone go crazy.
Through the chaos of graduation, there are a few tools students should be utilizing to handle all these decisions.
The Career Development Center, or CDC, on campus is a useful tool for students, faculty, and even alumni.
The CDC helps students with choosing a major, working on resumes, practicing interviews, and working on the job hunt.
The director of the CDC, Angie Kelly, is an alumna of Montevallo. Since graduating she received her Masters in counseling and interned at our counseling services. She has since come to the current position as director and loves helping students figure out their future.
One of the Career Development Center’s main goals is called vocational discernment. This allows students to take assessments and talk about their interests so counselors can help guide them to where they can use all of this in a career.
They use this information to go back into decide which major fits their dream job and pick classes accordingly.
Summer Stehmeier, a student that openly shared her experiences, loved the CDC. They helped her figure out how to get out of her then major and move to one that suited her goals and interests.
She loved how easy it was to make appointments and figure out where she needed to go educationally before graduating.
The CDC is located upstairs in Farmer Hall and is free to use. Taking advantage of these resources can help guide students to the right career path and ultimately to success.
