On Saturday, October 12th, The Montevallo Fire Department hosted their 42nd annual fire prevention parade on Main Street.
The event was held to bring awareness to all surrounding communities including the City of Montevallo about fire safety.
About 2,000 people came out to support the event.
One attendee said the reason she came out to the parade was because of her own experience.
“My family has been in previous situations that fire trucks have like helped them out and stuff, so I just came to celebrate”, said Jakesia Pettway.
Not only did Montevallo’s fire department host and participate in the parade, they also invited other partnering stations such as the Saginaw, Calera and Alabaster fire departments.
About 50 to 80 fire trucks attended the parade along with other surrounding businesses bringing awareness to several real-life situations.
Lieutenant David King of the Montevallo Fire Department said this event is always held at the end of National Fire Prevention Week.
“During this week, our fire inspector and our fire marshall went to the local schools to talk to the school children about evacuation plans for their homes, about smoke detectors and fire safety and what to do in case of a fire at home. We really just want people to be safe”, said King.
After the parade, large groups of attendees went to Orr Park to enjoy the continuation of the fire prevention week celebration.
The Montevallo Fire Department encourages students interested in the workforce of a fire professional to come to the station and volunteer.
