College can be difficult.
This is especially true for students who face challenges such as learning disabilities or financial struggles. The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program at UM gives support to these students.
“We follow our students from the time that we admit them to the time that they graduate. We want to see students who are able to do the best that they can in their classes,” said Denise Myers, UM director of TRIO SSS.”
TRIO SSS has many different ways to help students learn and improve both academically and socially, by offering services like free printing, student tutoring, and workshops.
“We want to see students develop confidence in both their known abilities and unknown abilities,” said Bree Roberts, UM academic coordinator of TRIO SSS.
TRIO’s workshops range from subjects such as time management, test anxiety, public speaking, and career development.
“I feel that students get a holistic view of the college experience because of the wide variety of workshops that we offer,” said Erica White, UM project specialist of TRIO SSS.
Although these workshops are currently only open to students involved in the TRIO SSS program and friends, White stated the workshops could become available for all students, eventually.
The UM TRIO SSS staff members urge eligible students who are unsure about program to find out more by visiting its office in the Student Support Services Building or view its web page at montevallo.edu.
