On Saturday, November 2, Selma held its first “Power of Her” Financial and Wellness Expo.
The women’s expo was held at Selma High School and was based off one of W.K. Kellogg’s Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Foundation located in Selma.
Lydia Chatmon, a member of the T.R.H.T. Selma foundation believes her partnership with the local organization brought this idea of a women’s empowerment event to life.
“We understand that there is a need to showcase the businesses that we have available in our community and to also provide follow up education so those folks who aren’t necessarily business savvy have a great idea but just need to take some steps to get there. Those are the folks that we are targeting,”said Chatmon.
The expo consisted of two panels of women discussing issues concerning black-owned businesses and the expansion of women starting their own brands.
After the open-floor panels, the expo turned into a networking mixer and a local shopping experience for the attendees.
About 15 vendors was at the expo according to Chatmon.
There were many businesses set up as booths for attendees looking for more crafty options.
Selma City Schools Superintendent Avis Williams says that this event is one of many for the city and the residents of Selma.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for the community to come together for a great cause, highlighting local businesses and giving women the opportunity to come together and learn and grow from each other,” said Williams.
Chatmon plans to continue organizing events similar to the “Power of Her” Expo to educate women about entrepreneurship and women empowerment.
