The University of Montevallo has many resources for students, one of the most prominent of these is the Falcon Success Center (FSC).
The FSC offers a wide range of initiatives to help improve the academic and liberal arts experience of students.
One of the most notable ways it sets out to do this is through the Learning Enrichment Center (LEC). The LEC, located on the bottom floor of Carmichael Library, offers free tutoring for students in both individual and small group sessions in a variety of courses.
“What they do is they talk to the students and determine what classes they need tutoring in, and then we try to match a peer tutor to that student, one who has mastered the class and can help the student,” said Brenda Knight, Director of Scholarships for the FSC and LEC. “It can be for an individual or for multiple times. It can be for a test.”
The FSC and LEC realize university-life can be demanding, and set out to help students improve their performance in the classroom. The FSC does more than just help students pass classes, though. It also can assist students in finding ways to pay for college.
“We’re trying to focus on financial literacy and helping students get better prepared for college,” said Knight.
Through the FSC, students can talk with advisors who will recommend scholarships and potential loan programs that best fit the individual’s situation. The FSC believes these conversations can help improve the graduation rate and make students more comfortable with their financial statuses.
“We’re teaching students about credit cards, and, you know, what is debt, and how do you get out of debt, and how to repay student loans,” said Bria Hines, Administrative Assistant for the FSC.
In addition to these benefits, the FSC can also assist in finding methods of studying abroad, giving students the opportunity to travel, gain knowledge of different cultures, and obtain college credits while doing so.
