The University of Montevallo takes pride in its Counseling Services Center and in its ability to meet with students in a timely fashion. When compared with other schools of similar size, however, UM has some of the longest wait times.
According to an employee at the Counseling Services Center, an initial intake meeting with a counselor must be scheduled about two weeks in advance. Out of 10 Alabama institutions of similar size, this is the longest wait time by a full week.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham sits at the top of the list, boasting no wait times for walk-in appointments. Following behind is the University of North Alabama, which claims can typically see first-time students within 24 hours.
Jacksonville State and Alabama State both typically see first-timers in 1-2 days, followed by Birmingham Southern, West Alabama and Alabama A&M, which all have wait times of only 2-3 days.
Huntingdon can usually see students in 3-4 days, followed by the University of Alabama at Huntsville with a wait time of one week. Montevallo typically takes two weeks.
Some students, like Grace Hoag, a junior at UM, believe this could be a problem.
“The wait takes a bit of time, about two weeks, sometimes three weeks,” Hoag said. “I guess there could be some negative impacts if a student has to wait two weeks, but one good thing the University of Montevallo does do is if there is an emergency, they try to see students as soon as possible.”
