Right now, the University of Montevallo campus would be hustling and bustling with finals. This week is usually filled with late nights in the library studying and students moving out for the summer.

However, thats not the case this semester.

Students had to leave campus on March 13 and complete the rest of the semester online due to COVID-19.

Most students have since returned to campus to move their things out of the dorms, but there are some students are still living in the residence halls, because they don’t have any other options.

Elliot Eguia is one of those students still on campus.

Eguia is from Moulton, Alabama but wasn’t able to go home once school shut down because of a difficult living situation and lack of reliable internet.

Since the rest of the semester has been completed online, internet was an necessity during this time.

Eugia says the process to request stay from the housing office was easy.  They emailed housing to request accommodations and heard back a few days later that they were allowed to stay.

Eugia and their roommate take things day by day now.

Their typical day is spent inside their 10′ by 25′ dorm room doing homework and studying with breaks to cook meals in the community kitchen.

They are cautious of everything they touch and sanitize often.

The Caf is still open, but not the regular hours. Students are not allowed to eat inside the Caf, but rather are given a prepackaged to-go meal to eat in their room.

Eguia says they’re still allowed to be outside of their rooms, however, it’s very ‘taboo’ and like a scene from an ‘apocalyptic show’ to be outdoors.

With the new ‘Safer at Home’ order Governor Kay Ivey gave, there has been no word yet on the next steps the University is taking with planning for other events or next semester.
