It was a day of fun and festivities for Montevallo. The city hosted its yearly Artwalk festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Families from the community came out to support local artists who set up tents along main street to display and sell their work.

Located just of campus, students at the University of Montevallo were able to spend the day in the streets socializing and taking in the sights. Wilson Dillard, a student at the university attended the walk with his friends before the college night mixer that evening.

“There’s all sorts of, ,you know, really cool stuff here.” he said, “I can see a lot of talent. Umm, there’s someone over that way who had some pen and ink drawings that were really cool, really caught my eye.”

Montevallo Artwalk is held in late October each year. The event features food and live music. All types of artwork are displayed in the many booths lining Main Street which include but are not limited to paintings, wood carvings, blown glass, pottery and sculptures.

The event is an opportunity for artists to show off their favorite and most creatively inspired pieces. One such artists was Natalie Henderson, an MFA student at the University of Montevallo, who explained the meaning behind her drawing of a praying mantis carrying a house on its back.

“The whole point of this piece was to show the symbolism of humanity balancing on nature’s back.” She said, “So it’s a support system for us all.”

The business on main street also opened their doors during the day to show some of the artwork that sits in historic downtown Montevallo all year long. The Blue Phrog gallery is one of the business that welcomed visitors in. The gallery features nearly a hundred pieces of art, all from artists within a one hundred mile radius of Montevallo.

The festival began to wrap up at 5 p.m. but more students continued to take to the streets in their Halloween costumes to mingle and purchase art for their dorm rooms.
