Alabama won big at the 2023 Oscars. Birmingham native filmmakers Daniel Scheinert and Paul Rogers received recognition for their work on the movie “Everything Everywhere all at Once”. The movie swept the categories, winning seven out of the 11 awards they were nominated for on March 12.
Scheinert is one of the producers, directors and writers and Rogers is the film editor. “Everything Everywhere all at Once” won Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Directing, Best Actress and concluded the night with Best Picture.
During his acceptance speech for Best Directing, Scheinert dedicated the award to all the mothers in the world.
“Specifically [to] my mom and dad, Ken and Becky, thank you for not squashing my creativity when I was making really disturbing horror films,” he said.
Rogers met the directors Scheinert and Daniel Kwan at Scheinert’s birthday party before coming on board for the making of the film.
“Wow, this is uh, too much. This is my second film, y’all. This is crazy,” Rogers said during his acceptance speech for Best Film Editing.
Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema in Birmingham congratulated the filmmakers on Instagram for their successes.
If you want to make movies, you don’t have to be in Hollywood or go to a film school. The University of Montevallo offers a digital filmmaking minor for aspiring filmmakers.
Classes include essential skills like screenwriting, documentary making, and advanced video post-production.
Alabama has many opportunities for filmmakers as well. Sidewalk holds one of the state’s largest film festivals every year. The event showcases more than 250 filmmakers and welcomes 15,000 guests to Birmingham.
This year’s festival will take place from August 21-27. It will be held in downtown Birmingham’s theater district.
Students are encouraged to enter their movies and many Montevallo students have had their work shown at the event.
