Dr. Courtney Bentley, provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of Montevallo, was chosen as a 2023 honoree for the 10th annual “Women Who Shape the State”.
This is Alabama selected Bentley in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8. Twenty-five women were honored out of 200 nominees.
The honorees are chosen based on their contributions to their communities and setting an example for others with their efforts.
UM President Dr. John W. Stewart III spoke highly of Bentley in a press release emailed by the university.
“She is among the most talented academicians I have known, and she possesses the devotion and professional presence necessary for effective leadership at the highest levels,” he said. “She is a genuine champion for the enterprise of teaching and learning and is committed to helping students reach the full measure of their promise.”
UM officially named Bentley to her position as provost and vice president on Aug. 17 of last year.
Her position was effective Sept. 1, and her experience in rural, suburban and urban environments provided opportunities for her to observe how students from diverse backgrounds and communities learn most effectively.
She is committed to increasing equitable opportunities, improving educational outcomes and seeking social justice for underserved communities.
