For the first time in U.S history a former president surrendered to law enforcement and was placed under arrest.
On Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social and called on his supporters to “take our nation back” as he pointed to news reports about the possibility of being arrested Tuesday or soon after.
Trump cited no clear basis for his expected arrest beyond citing what he called “illegal leaks” about an ongoing investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to bring a criminal charge over his handling of hush money during his 2016 presidential campaign.
On Tuesday, Trump appeared in the criminal courts building in Manhattan to face the charges. According to reporters, “even as the former president’s supporters rallied outside the courthouse, Trump sat quiet, listening to the charges.
The 34- count indictment alleges that Trump falsified New York business records to conceal damaging information before the 2016 presidential election.
In addition to the 34 charges, Prosecutors accused Trump of covering up a sex scandal involving adult film star, Stormy Daniels.
After pleading not guilty, trump gave a defiant speech at the Mar-a-Lago resort, where he referred, among other things, to the two impeachment trials during his presidency. During the speech he called the investigation a politically motivated witch hunt and said the New York Indictment is “just the latest in an onslaught of fraudulent investigations.”
“This fake case was brought about only to interfere with the 2024 election and should be dropped immediately,” Trump said.
Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanch has spoken about the hearing, saying Trump is very upset.
“He’s absolutely frustrated,” Blanch said, “He believes there is a great injustice happening in our country.”
