MONTEVALLO Ala. — Centrally located in the state of Alabama, about 35 miles from the Magic City, lies Montevallo. The Shelby County City may only have a population of 7,229, but it is also home to the University of Montevallo, which approximately 3,000 students attend.
Ten thousand people is a lot of mouths to feed, and though Montevallo is a small town, it is full of cuisine that is more than just fast food restaurants.
Here are five restaurants that you should try in Montevallo, based on Yelp, Google and Trip Advisor reviews.
- El Agave

El Agave is a culinary destination that showcases authentic Mexican flavors with a charming and cozy decor. The menu boasts a diverse array of dishes, from the simplicity of a Pollo Loco to sizzling fajitas and enchiladas. Another one of their attractive qualities is their handcrafted margaritas, and after three o’clock on Tuesdays and Thursdays margaritas are half priced. Many say it is a must-visit spot for travelers and locals alike.

The management and staff always treat my friends and I like family, the wait for a table is never long (if there even is a wait!), the food always comes out quickly, and the prices are very reasonable. Main Street Tavern is a bar and grill with a menu that combines classic American fare with innovative twists. This restaurant is a beloved dining destination for locals and visitors alike. Also known as “The Tav” to locals, the restaurant showcases a full bar with many cocktails, wines and beers to choose from.
Jeffrey D posted a review on Tripadvisor and says, “So, Main St. Tavern has become one of our favorite ‘go to’ casual restaurants on a Friday or Saturday evening. (Oh yeh, by the way, if you arrive after 5pm, be prepared to wait a while for a table)”
“Many excellent entree items that we frequently order: All hamburgers are delicious, with our favorite being the mushroom swiss burger. Do try the onion straws as a side! The fried shrimp dinner is also excellent, especially on Fridays when offered as a special. Fish tacos are also OK, but many better at other restaurants.”
“Some items to avoid: Fried chicken wings are a loser. Very small wings, very little celery for about $10 for seven small wings. No thanks. The “deconstructed shepard’s pie” consists of some beef mush with some peas on a mound of mashed potatoes.”
“If you want good Shepard’s Pie, go to Cheesecake Factory.”
“The steaks are OK, but basically Applebee’s quality. Not great, not bad.”

Zapopan is a go-to destination if you are seeking an authentic Mexican dining experience in Montevallo. “Good service: The service is excellent! The waiters come around often to provide water or to simply check in. They earn their tip and appreciate their customers in such a small college town.”
“Delicious drank: oh yes…get the margaritas, they don’t play…nuff said!”
“Questionable decor: Carpet, no…they should have tile.”

There are Chinese buffets, and then there’s China Garden. If you’re in need of a big meal with no limit, China Garden may be the way to go. The cafeteria-style approach to dining will leave your stomach full and satisfied.
Reverie B. from Yelp says, “A great small Chinese buffet in Montevallo. The food is as real and as good as it can get. When visiting though, try to avoid their busy hours, as they get packed. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Since it is a small Chinese buffet, you do have limited options. So if you’re looking for a quick eat, or something simple, this is the place to go. Very clean, nice décor, and great food. The best part is their giant picture of dinosaurs on one wall, and dauphins on the other. Be sure to check them out!”

Finally opening in 2022 after, a two year delay due to COVID-19, Slice Pizza is the fourth of its kind in this chain restaurant franchise. The restaurant “Is as local as you can get.” their website says. The restaurant also boasts about how they use local ingredients. This one of a kind pizza place like no other in Montevallo is a good place to grab a slice and hang with friends.

Slice Pizza is located in the heart of Montevallo, just seconds from the University of Montevallo campus. Featuring stone oven cooked pizzas, amazing chargrilled wings and various adult beverages, there’s something for everyone! You’ll also love the outdoor seating that makes for great people watching! Stop in and have a slice of Slice! I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!”
