Each year, Montevallo Main Street hosts its annual Hometown Halloween. The event provides a safe space for families to go trick-or-treating with their friends and neighbors.

It’s a half-mile stretch of almost every Main Street business, community groups and college students handing out candy and gifts. The University of Montevallo’s own Freddie the Falcon even made an appearance. He was spotted taking photos and giving out fist-bumps to members of the Montevallo community.

Adele Nelson, director of Montevallo Chamber of Commerce, expressed how the event promotes building relationships with local businesses.

“It’s a chance for business owners to build trust and learn about the community,” Nelson said.

A lot of small business owners got into the spirit of Halloween too. They wore costumes and played holiday tunes while handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.

The Provenance Church on Main Street even stuck around after Hometown Halloween ended to host their Halloween Pit Stop. The event began two years ago, and citizens have been returning each year.

We love having a safe place for the community to come and enjoy time with their families.

Marcus Mullet, Pastor at Provenance Church

Pastor Marcus Mullet expressed how rewarding it is to see familiar faces returning to their sanctuary.

“It’s been great to have returning people. We had people peeking in while they were trick-or-treating to see if we were doing this again,” Mullet said. “We love having a safe place for the community to come and enjoy time with their families.”

This event allows a space for families to not only trick-or-treat but also play games and win other prizes. Children of all ages were playing games like ring-toss and fishing for candy– while making friends with other kid in the community.

Over 900 kids passed by throughout the afternoon, with many families returning after 5p.m.

Mullet expressed his gratitude for the Montevallo community while playing games with the children that attended.

“We had the opportunity to share the gospel with passerbys during Hometown Halloween, and the people that attended our Halloween Pit Stop,” Mullet said. “Not only was the turnout great, but the community was open to learn about the gospel.”
