Though the brewery scene in Birmingham is booming, Shelby County lays claim to some high quality watering holes as well. Alabaster’s Siluria Brewing Company is the perfect mixture of good times, good beer, and good people.

The brewery got its start after founder Danny Sample retired from the army. He and his wife Tammy picked up home brewing and eventually got the idea to make it a business in Alabaster. Fashioned from an old post office, Siluria Brewing Company was born.

The brews on draft cycle between seasonal favorites while also featuring some Siluria staples. Sample is not only confident in the beers on tap, but thankful for those he serves, saying, “I think [we] make the best craft beer around. We stay very traditional to our craft beers. We’re very community focused. We’re customer focused. I mean, we couldn’t do this without our customers, without the community of Alabaster, Montevallo, Pelham, Helena. It’s really a great place to come and enjoy craft beer, nonalcoholic drinks, wine, or ciders.”

Beer isn’t the only attraction, however. Siluria also hosts a variety of events each week. From “Books & Brews” to “Singo,” there’s always something to look forward to.

Trivia is arguably the most popular event, occurring every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Teams at different tables grab cards and face off, testing their knowledge and competing for a chance to win a gift card.

The homelike atmosphere drew bartender Shea Serna to Siluria. She felt that it stood out from other breweries in the Birmingham area, having that signature ‘Cheers’ quality of everybody knowing your name.

“It’s a lot of fun here,” Serna said. “We treat you like family. It’s a lot more than just kind of a sterile atmosphere.”

Sample echoed these sentiments, saying, “Enjoy a game, play some corn hole, sit around and talk. I think it’s probably one of the best places to come and really feel at ease just like you’re sitting at home enjoying time with your friends.”

It’s Siluria’s goal to create a welcoming atmosphere for the whole family, while giving the adults the added benefit of high quality beer.
