MONTEVALLO, Ala.—The Department of Communication and the Career Development Center co-hosted Communication Career Day, an annual networking fair that featured 40 speakers with 15 of them being University of Montevallo Alumni.
For the past few weeks since the event, I’ve had time to reflect on the importance of Communication Career Day, both in general and from my perspective as a graduating senior.
I’ve come to realize that, for me, this event ranks as the second most important thing I could attend, right after graduation.
What stood out to me was how the event showed me that job applications aren’t as intimidating as they seem.
Originally, I thought they were huge obstacles, but the event made it clear that the process is just another part of the journey into a potential career.

I must give credit to my professors, who continually remind me that I have the experience to land any dream job I want.
Their encouragement boosted my confidence and allowed me to be prepared to succeed in my future career.
With that confidence, I handed out handprinted resumes and held meaningful professional conversations with potential employers.
Through the experience, I discovered companies I hadn’t even considered, like Shipt, a grocery delivery company headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.
Overall, Communication Career Day gave me the opportunity to showcase myself as more than another name on a resume.
It allowed me to showcase a personality that employers would not get through a screen or even an interview.
This event was a defining moment for me as I get ready to transition from a student to a career driven individual, one that will carry me into life after graduation.
