MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo’s board of trustees approved the hiring of Dr. Terry Roberson as UM’s interim president, following the departure of Dr. John Stewart, who will leave that position at the end of June.

All trustees present at the special called June 26 meeting voted in favor or hiring Dr. Roberson as the university’s interim president.

Dr. Roberson said he is “grateful for the opportunity to serve.”

He is no stranger to Montevallo. In addition to being a UM alumnus, he previously served as interim president in 2009, and he was also the provost and vice president of academic affairs from 2008 to 2013. Dr. Roberson has also served as dean of graduate studies and dean of the College of Education.

Dr. Roberson returns to Montevallo at a time of financial difficulty. However, during Thursday’s board meeting, interim Chief Financial Officer Dr. DeAnna Smith said recent cost-cutting measures has shored up UM’s finances. Profit from summer courses is also more than $400,000, she noted during her report to the board.
