MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Falcon Flight is program designed to help special education students who have completed high school develop real life skills. The program started in 2018 with an important goal in mind: to give kids an opportunity to experience the college life while also practicing skills needed to function in the adult world.

One way Falcon Flight students get involved on campus is by going to the McChesney Student Activity Center on a weekly basis to do physical exercise.

Through a number of various exercises, the students are able to build and strengthen motor skills that are important for learning how to function in the world around us.

Doctor Shawn Mitchell, who is also a faculty member at the University of Montevallo. Plays a big part in helping these students develop skills for life after Falcon Flight.

“It’s basically a college program for these students to get skills necessary for daily life and some basic job skills as well.”

The Falcon Flight students get involved on campus and in the community in a couple of different ways. Students attend classes to audit, learning about various subjects without having to participate in the course work. They also get involved with the community by delivering the newest version of the Chamber Chatter to businesses around town. Students are also able to give back by volunteering to pass out food items at the local food bank.

Falcon Flight does more than give students a glimpse of what the college life is like. These students are able to make lifelong memories and friends. All while learning and developing real world skills they can put to use long after the program.
