MONTEVALLO, Ala. – UM’s dance team geared up for their first basketball game Nov 24. For many of the members, the anticipation is a mix of excitement nerves, and hard work.
Aurora Scott, a sophomore English major is entering her first semester as part of the dance team. Despite being new to dance, she says the experiences she’s had with the team have been positive.
“I’m not the best at dancing and don’t really have dance experience,” Scott said. “But our captain, Bianca, really helps me nicely, and sometimes she pushes me to be more confident. Even when I mess up, it feels really nice because I have a team to fall back on.”
Scott said the team practices twice a week, but the preparation for games doesn’t stop there. She said she often rehearses their cheers and halftime routines in her bedroom as well as the shower. She wants to make sure she’s ready for her first performance. “I’m so nervous and stressed out, but I’m excited to wear my jersey and be out there with the team.”
Returning dancer Kayla Hampton says the buildup to the first game feels familiar but still exciting. “I love it,” Hampton said. “I love the new girls and how excited they are to be with us and the new dances we have in store.”

Hampton, a second year graduate student, joined the team last year after always wanting to participate during her undergraduate years. With an extra season under her belt, Hampton said she feels more confident and prepared going into their first game.
Like Scott, Hampton practices beyond scheduled rehearsals, often running routines in front of her mirror, and even in her head throughout the day. “I practice nonstop,” Hampton said. “I can’t wait for everyone to see our new halftime show.”
Both dancers say that their performance at the game will showcase their hard work and set the tone for the season. Hampton even remarked how she was looking forward to seeing both basketball team’s performances.
“Go Falcons!” Hampton says.
