MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The March Madness Tournament was full gear last week, as the Sweet 16 is now set after the first two rounds came to a close Sunday night. The Alabama Crimson Tide were final team to move on to the 3rd round, beating Texas Tech 90-65.

Three of the four No. 1 seeds are also moving on, with Michigan, Duke and Arizona winning their respective matchups. However, Florida, the last No. 1 seed and defending national champions, got sent home in an upset loss against the No. 9 seed in Iowa 73-72. The Hawkeyes haven’t been to the Sweet 16 since 1999.

That wasn’t the only upset that took place on Sunday, as Tennessee beat No. 3 seed Virginia 79-72. No. 5 seed St. Johns beat No. 4 seed Kansas 67-65 with a game-winning layup.

The last upset to take place in the second round may have been the most surprising. Texas, the No. 11 seed, moved on to the Sweet 16 after beating No. 3 seed Gonzaga 74-68. This isn’t their first upset in the tournament, as they also beat No. 6 seed BYU in the first round 79-71.

The rest of the teams moving on to the Sweet 16 are UConn, Houston, Purdue, Iowa St., Illinois, Michigan St., Nebraska and Arkansas.

Some other notable upsets from the first round of play are No. 12 seed High Point beating No. 5 seed Wisconsin 83-82, No. 11 seed VCU getting the victory over No. 6 seed North Carolina 82-78, No. 10 seed Texas A&M beating No. 7 seed St. Mary’s 63-50, No. 9 seed St. Louis winning against No. 8 seed Georgia 102-77, No. 9 seed TCU beating No. 8 seed Ohio St. 66-64, No. 9 seed Utah St. getting the win over No. 8 seed Villanova 86-76, and No. 9 seed Iowa beating No. 8 seed Clemson 67-61.
