MONTEVALLO Ala. – Alpha Gamma Delta hosted its annual spring philanthropy event, Kick Out Hunger, on March 11. The event featured a head-to-head style kickball tournament with the other Greek organizations.
The event had a high turnout, and people were in high spirits even though there was rain. There were hot dogs, beverages, music and students could also play a game of cornhole.
The organizations came to give it their all in support of fighting hunger. Alpha Tau Omega, or ATO, took the win for the fraternities, with a total of 12 points, and Delta Gamma took the win for the sororities, with a total of eight points.
The event was hosted to raise money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. This foundation delegates its proceeds to: Feeding America, Meals on Wheels and small business grants. The sorority raised roughly $700 to donate.
1 in 5 children in America face food insecurity, and in Shelby County, 11% of children face food insecurity. From the Feeding America website.
Kendall Sherbundy, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, spoke about why she loves being able to give back, “Nowadays it feels like more people than not have struggles with getting food at some point, whether it be one of three meals we need a day or getting food at all. So knowing that we can help people in a way that’s also fun is a great feeling.”
The event closed out with a rainbow, and it was time to clean up.
If you would like to know more about Feeding America, you can visit their website, and if you want to look more into donating or needing assistance, there are food pantries around campus and locally in Montevallo as well.
