UM theatre majors Kasaundra Couch and Alanna Angrisano put on an impromptu production of a classic fairy tale Wednesday by the Brothers Grimm: Bearskin.
The tale follows a vagrant soldier, who strikes a deal with the devil to win himself a bride. As we all know however, you never come out on top when dealing with Satan.
The production comes at a time when UM already has a play in the works; this week there are performances nearly every night of UM’s production of Urinetown. However, Wednesday was a “dead day” with no performance and Couch seized it for herself.
How did they manage to put it together so quickly? Shadow puppets. Senior Alanna Angrisano designed the puppets and set herself, and also worked as a voice actor along with Couch, who put together the script and directed.
according to Couch, about 55 people were crammed into the Chichester Theatre to see the performance.
Angrisano and Couch hope to see more types of theatrical experiences like this in the future at Montevallo, and they’ve said this isn’t the last time they might work with puppets.
In total, the production only took about 2 weeks to put together. Couch made it seem easy! “No hassle, no struggle.”, she said.
