On September 26th, the university office of service learning put on their annual Volunteer and Internship Fair in the Anna Irvine Dinning Hall.

The Director of The Career Development Center, Angie Kelly, described the event as “something that helps our community while also helping our students.”

Organisations gathered from all over Shelby and Jefferson counties to share information about their internship and volunteer opportunities available to students. Some of organizations present included The McWane Center, Shelby County Emergency Assistance, The American Village, and the Montevallo Boys and Girls Club.

Many of the organizations at the event were also partners in the University Falcon Scholars in Action program. Falcon Scholars is an honors program in which 25 UM students are selected each year to serve clients in agencies and programs throughout Shelby County. Students selected are provided with a significant annual stipend from Shelby County in exchange for their service.

Falcon Scholar’s ambassador and psychology major Aliya Carpenter says that this experience has been the highlight of her collegiate career. “I love how my experience with Falcon Scholars has prepared me for work out in my field. I am excited to share this program with other students as the program ambassador.”

Students can find out more about becoming a Falcon Scholar in Action on the service learning web page.
