A Montevallo residence hall is housing an uninvited visitor

An unwelcome guest has found its way into The University of Montevallo’s Napier Hall. Patches of black mold have reportedly been found growing in damp places in the residence hall, such as in showers, behind dorm air conditioning units, and around basement pipelines.

The presence of black mold could lead to possible health risks to those exposed, and can cause symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and irritated skin or eyes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nicholas Smith, a Napier Hall resident, felt frustrated with the problem.

“At least, try cleaning it,” Smith suggested to the campus higher-ups.

Black mold is a problem that persists in dated buildings, and the UM campus is not immune to this dilemma.

“I mean, there shouldn’t be black mold in the halls,” said Nicholas Neil, another Napier Hall resident. “You can smell it when you walk in the bathrooms. I have to go all the way to the other side of the building just to do something like take a shower.”

The university claims it realizes black mold can be a serious issue, and advises any students who encounter black mold to immediately issue a work form with the physical plant
