There is a new club at the University of Montevallo (UM) where members are taking a hands-on approach to speaking English.
The American Sign Language (ASL) Club aims to help spread awareness about ASL and Deaf culture through activities and conversation.
“Our club meetings are usually pretty laid back. We usually introduce ourselves, play games, and talk about events and planning,” said Gillian May, senior and ASL Club president.
May plans to hold events like silent suppers, where members can hone their skills by communicating with one another using ASL.
The club is still in its beginning stages, since this is its official, first semester, but students are slowly becoming aware of its existence.
“Me and my friends saw a flier for an interest meeting that we got to come to last semester. After going to the interest meeting, we decided that we wanted to be a part of the creation and the start of the club and we’ve been coming ever since,” said Rachel Fisher, junior and ASL Club member.
Most of the club members have experience with ASL, but anyone is welcome to join, regardless of skill level.
