It’s that time of year again.. flu and other illnesses are spreading around campus.

Students are having to miss class and work in order to recover.

Adam Jones, a sophomore at Montevallo missed nearly a week of class because he was sick. “If I’m feeling like I don’t need to go to class especially not to get any one else sick, I’m not gonna go to class.”

But one thing students worry about when missing class is all the work they’ll have to make up when they return.

“It was very hectic trying to catch up, but luckily my professors were understanding,” says Jones.

The professors at the University of Montevallo want students to know its okay to miss class if you are sick.

“It’s pretty simple, if you don’t feel like coming to school, if you’re sick if you have a fever or the flu or something stay home and take care of yourself. And then come back to class when you feel better and I think any faculty member would let you make up an exam if your sick or something,” says Department of Communication Chair Dr. Randall Scott.

There are many resources on campus to help if you get behind.

The Learning Enrichment Center, or LEC, offers tutoring in almost every subject on campus. Students are able to set up appointments, and the tutors can help go over information you might have missed in class.

Mental health is also important to be aware of while fighting of physical illnesses.

Counselors at the Grainger Family Center for Counseling Services are prepared to help students with what ever struggles they maybe facing.

The first step in being healthy is acting healthy.

The Student Health Services stress that it is not necessary to make an appointment at the first symptom of an illness. Rest, hydration and self care paired with over the counter medication is most helpful when it comes to recovering from the flu or other respiratory illnesses.

Follow CDC guidelines for healthy living and staying safe during the peak illness season and throughout the global health emergency of the Coronavirus.
