(Montevallo, Ala.) The University of Montevallo is not like your traditional southern school that has a football team. However, there are many other sports teams and many student-athletes.

The University of Montevallo started as a women’s liberal arts college which is why the college does not have a football team. Montevallo did not start accepting men until 1956.

There are 15 Men’s and Women’s sports teams on campus. There are 470 student-athletes 62 are men and 208 are women.

The University of Montevallo’s first-ever collegiate sporting event was a Women’s basketball game in December of 1921.

  • Montevallo Men’s Baseball team has 41 team members and the Women’s softball team has 23 members.
  • Montevallo Men’s Basketball team has 13 members and the Women’s Basketball team has 14 members 
  • The Montevallo Men’s Golf team has 14 members and the women’s golf team has seven members.
  • Montevallo Men’s Lacrosse team has 51 members and the Women’s lacrosse team has 32 members 
  • The Men’s soccer team has 29 members and the women’s soccer team has 25 members.
  • Montevallo men’s Tennis team has 17 members and the women’s team has nine members 
  • The track and field team(combined) has 181 members.
  • The Volleyball team has 14 team members.

Athletic Director Mark Richards said “Watching our student-athletes participate in the competition is exciting, emotional and sometimes heartbreaking.  Win or lose, they are representing UM with pride.”
