The university hosted a long-awaited ribbon-cutting ceremony for one of the newest buildings on campus, the Center for the Arts, on November 18th. The center opened its doors to students during the Fall 2020 semester, but the pandemic delayed the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Students, faculty members, many other guests, and others attended this historic and long-awaited event.

After the ribbon was cut, several remarks were made by Mr. Chad Scroggins, County Manager for Shelby County, and Dr. Steven Peters, dean of the College of Fine Arts, just to name a few.

Additionally, the stage in the Discover Shelby Theatre was dedicated in memory of UM alumna and Broadway star Rebecca Luker.

Rebecca Luker

Luker was best-known for her Broadway musicals and Tony Award nominations. One of her most memorable performances was in “The Sound of Music.”

Remarks and words of encouragement were made by Luker’s family, as well as a video presentation for her.

A brick with her signature was given to her husband, Danny Burnstein, to honor Luker. In addition, Luker’s first Tony Award nomination is hung in the lobby of the building.

Luker’s husband, Burstein, hopes this will give students a boost of confidence as they work towards their careers. “Montevallo is really where Rebecca blossomed, where she learned her craft, and where she finally saw her future possible.”

Not only will students be reminded of her hard work and success, but they will also see her signature projected in light before any performance on the theater.
