Montevallo, Ala- The University of Montevallo may not have American football like other southern schools but it has 21 other Men’s and Women’s sports teams on campus which can play a big part in the campus population

Sophomore Nyla Shipman said “At the University of Montevallo I do see a lot of athletes on campus and especially on the bottom hill. Most of the time I see athletes in class or at the sac but I do see a lot of them.”
As of fall 2021, there are 21 sports on campus with 470 student-athletes on campus 262 are men and 208 are women. Compared to students enrolled on campus there are 2,625 students enrolled at the University of Montevallo.

A school that has more athletes in their population than UM is Birmingham-Southern College with 70% of their students being non-athletes and 30% being athletes.

The average athletic scholarship for all sports in Division II sports is $5,548 for men and $6,814 for women.
Track and Field athlete, Junior Drew Roberts said “ Knowing whether a university was athlete-friendly was very important to me. Montevallo provided a lot of support in that regard. When I got here I found it easy to make friends outside of my sport”
When high school students (especially athletes) are picking a university they do take in the athletic culture on campus. Athletes and their footprints on campus can help attract high school and transfer students to the campus.
