The University of Montevallo is changing its COVID-19 protocols as students and faculty kick off the first normal semester since the pandemic began in 2020.

In an email sent to all UM students Friday, Dr. Tammi Dahle, Dean of Students, announced that UM is adjusting its COVID-19 protocols “to be consistent with our traditional cold/flu precautions.” The email also urged students to treat a COVID infection the same way they would if they got a cold or the flu.

Other changes to UM’s COVID protocols include no longer notifying faculty when a student in their class reports a positive COVID test and no longer requiring clearance from Student Health Services to return to class.

Student Health Services will also no longer manage contact tracing or send notifications to those in close contact with a person who tests positive for COVID.

The university is also limited active case management to those at increased risk for severe illness who may require assistance.

These changes went into effect on the first day of the Fall 2022 semester, according to the email.

“We will continue to monitor and assess data carefully and adjust protocols as needed to promote safety,” Dr. Dahle wrote in the email.

If you test positive for COVID-19; experience symptoms of COVID-19, including a onset of a new cough or congestion, head or body aches, sore throat, and/or loss of taste or smell; or are in close contact with someone who has tested positive, visit UM’s Health Services webpage for information on what steps you should take.
