Last Thursday the Environmental Club (E-Club) held a meeting with a panel of experts to help spread information about Ebenezer Swamp.

The environmental club is led by associate environmental studies professor, Dr. Susan Caplow and president Lauren Tidwell.

This area of wetlands is located in the city of Alabaster, they have plans to develop the area where this ecological preserve currently sits.

The event consisted of presentations, small group discussions, and a question-and-answer session. Every community member that attended the event was able to voice their concerns and different ways they can help serve the cause.

Even though the swamp isn’t located in the city of Montevallo, students have led the charge to make a change for the environment.

“It feels like for a lot of ES majors, especially, it feels like our responsibility to protect that,” Tidwell said.

It has become a vital part of the Montevallo community and the curriculum that is taught at the University.

“I think we have an obligation to do as a, as an entity but of course, in environmental studies, we use the swamp all the time for teaching purposes,” Caplow said. “And our whole goal was to bring kids from all over this area into a unique ecological area and teach them all the benefits of the swamp and all the things that it offers our community.”
