The city of Montevallo held its annual Christmas parade on December 1.

In previous years, the event was a big attraction with about 77 floats last year according to Montevallo’s Mayor Rusty Nix. This year, people came in masses to get into the Christmas spirit.

The event was kicked off with a tree lighting where small businesses and people in the community were recognized.

In the previous weeks, businesses decorated their windows and storefronts in preparation for the holiday. The winners were announced at the lighting. This year’s winner was The Flower Shop, which is located a few blocks from Main Street.

Following the tree lighting, people gathered on the sidewalk to watch the parade. Different themed floats filled the streets, throwing candy for kids to enjoy. Student groups from various Montevallo schools and organizations marched in the parade as well.

Main Street was packed as the night went on, with people caroling and enjoying the night. The parade put the community in the holiday spirit. Highlighting the Montevallo community, the recognitions and parade were a message to support small businesses by shopping locally this holiday season.
