The University of Montevallo’s Black Student Union is hosting several events for BSU week. Montevallo’s Black Student Union has been an integral part of campus and focuses on “include and understand the voice, opinion, need, and concern of all minority students. The purpose is to promote a diverse and culturally enriched experience for all students on campus.”

The week kicks off this Tuesday with “Black Table Talk”. The event will be held in the Humanities Auditorium from 6 to 8 p.m. The talk will discuss “social justice issues impacting the black community”. You can RSVP for the event and find out more information on FalconLink.

On Wednesday, the week continues with the BSU “Greek Night”. This will be a social mixer and opportunity for students to “Get to know our NPHC organizations and see a special presentation,” according to the Montevallo BSU. The event will be hosted in Farmer Hall from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The NPHC or The National Pan-Hellenic Council “was established as a coordinating body of nine member historically African American Greek letter organizations.” Currently, UM has five National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations. They are Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi and Zeta Phi Beta.

On Thursday, Feb. 23, there will be an “Open Mic Night” for students to “showcase their talents”. The performance will be held in Farmer Hall from 8 to 10 p.m. To perform, students must fill out the form by Feb. 17. The performances will range from spoken-word poetry to music performances, and stand-up comedy routines.
