MONTEVALLO ALA. – On Oct. 4, 2023 counseling services at the University of Montevallo held an ADHD workshop to shine light on different tips and tricks to help manage life on campus with ADHD.

Star Perkins, a sophomore at the University of Montevallo who attended the event said she is excited to see events like this showcased on campus because it lets her feel seen.

“Think of it like this: as a person with ADHD, It always felt like I never fit in the puzzle, but events like this help us all connect.”

The whole event start to finish lasted two hours and gave insight on different tips like body-doubling when doing tasks to help stay on track, or wearing noise cancelling headphones to stay focused. Overall, the event seemed to be a hit and helped everyone feel connected with each other.

When arriving, you were greeted with a variety of fidget toys and coloring sheets to keep the racing brain occupied while listening to the power point. Pipe cleaners, to make your own pipe cleaner animal friend, crayons, markers and pens were available for anyone to take and grab as the event progressed.

The event started at 3:30pm, but there wasn’t much traffic until around 4pm, students that attended said. It was very welcoming for anyone who was there to listen, there for a friend, there for peace of mind, or for themselves.

Another event-goer Jasmine Hall, or “Jay” as her friends and family call her, sophomore at the University also stated that the event was a success and helped her learn more about ADHD not only for herself, but for her sister as well.

“My sister has ADHD so I came today to learn more about it. There aren’t a lot of ways to help work with something like this. I just want to help her and maybe she’ll be able to find relief from some of the things I learned today.”

Feeling hopeful for her sister, Jasmine is excited to see if any of the tips she learned at the workshop could be beneficial going forward.

Sometimes it can be hard to find your place on campus and find the people you click with right away, but counselling services does a wonderful job helping all students at the university feel at home and welcomed. Even on good days, counselling services are supportive and there to listen.
