MONTEVALLO, Ala – A powerful thunderstorm Tuesday evening caused substantial damage across Montevallo, prompting the University of Montevallo and the regional school district to revise Wednesday schedules.
The storm uprooted trees, severed power lines and obstructed roads throughout the city. Fallen trees were reported along Moody Street, with one falling onto a power line. Additional downed trees were spotted near Valley Street, Main Street and North Boundary Street.
Following the weather event, the University of Montevallo initially delayed the start of classes to 10 a.m. and transitioned to remote learning for the day. Montevallo High School, Montevallo Middle School and Montevallo Elementary School each pushed back their start times by two hours.
These adjustments were implemented to provide enough time for clean up operations and utility personnel to remove debris. While fallen trees were reported throughout the community, the university says it is not facing any electrical outages.
Restoration work began late Tuesday and continued into Wednesday to remove fallen trees and address structural damage.
The university expects to return to standard operations by Thursday.
