This past Tuesday, the University of Montevallo’s Mass Communication department hosted the Alabama SkillsUSA, a technical skills training, leadership development, and hands-on experiences program developed by State Govender, Kay Ivey. The competition took place in Strong Hall, where eleven schools participate with over 50 students in attendance.

Participants got to learn and work alongside faculty within the department and use their prior knowledge to write scripts and produce their own newscast. UM Mass Comm students had the opportunity to switch from their usual roles as students and got to serve as judges for the competition.

The grading rubric consisted of multiple categories including timing & energy, team communication, shot framing, direction, and multiple other key factors within news broadcasting. The scores for the competition have been accounted for and submitted but the results are still pending.
