MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Interstate 65 is now open in Calera after southbound lanes were closed for seven hours Tuesday after a truck carrying excavation equipment struck the underside of the County Road 87 bridge at the Shelby County Airport exit just before noon, according to posts on the ALDOT East Central Region Facebook page.

The strike caused concrete and debris to fall onto the interstate below, injuring several people.

The University of Montevallo sent an email to faculty, staff and students Tuesday afternoon encouraging them to avoid Exit 234 and to allow extra time for traveling to and from campus.

ALDOT says the southbound lane of the CR-87 bridge will stay closed for several weeks while the bridge is being repaired.
