MONTEVALLO, Ala. – For some people, clothing is simply something to wear. For Tyler Wright, known as Pyro Jamal, it is an opportunity to express individuality. Through his clothing brand, LaPhrēo, Jamal is turning his passion for fashion into a business built on creativity, freedom and self-expression. “I wanted the brand to represent more than just clothing, Jamal says. “I wanted it to represent a mindset and give people the confidence to express who they are through what they wear.”

Background
Born and raised in Jemison, Alabama, Jamal’s fashion journey started during his senior year of high school. What started as an interest in customizing and painting shoes soon sparked a deeper curiosity about fashion, particularly the process of designing and manufacturing clothing.
Fashion influencers Jadon Grundy and Forest Ripperton inspired Jamal to explore his creativity and consider what it would take to establish his own brand.
“That inspiration led me to launch my first clothing brand, TempnDinero,” he said. Where I began learning the fundamentals of the fashion industry and what it takes to build a brand from the ground up.”
Eventually, legal and personal circumstances led him to close that chapter and pursue a different direction. Rather than allowing that experience to end his ambitions, he used it to start again.
Launching LaPhrēo
His next steps were LaPhrēo, a brand that more closely reflects his personal identity and creative vision. The name LaPhrēo carries a meaning that goes beyond its unique appearance.
Inspired by the concept of freedom, the name combines “La,” meaning “The,” with “Phrēo,” meaning “Free from bondage.” Jamal wanted a name that would stand out while remaining unforgettable. “I wanted a name that was distinctive, yet memorable, he said. To me, freedom represents the ability to be yourself and express your individuality without limitations.”
However, building LaPhrēo has required more than creativity. It has also demanded financial discipline, sacrifice and the willingness to learn through difficult experiences.
When Jamal launched TempnDinero, his biggest obstacle was gaining the knowledge and understanding on how to build a clothing brand from the ground up. “At the time, there weren’t as many resources readily available, so I had to learn a lot through research, experimentation and figuring things out on my own,” says Jamal.
With LaPhrēo, the challenge has shifted toward managing finances while balancing the demands of everyday life. Jamal says,“There have been times when I’ve had to put nearly every available dollar back into the business while still trying to keep up with life outside of it.”
However he says, those challenges have taught him patience, resourcefulness and the importance of remaining committed to a vision- even when the circumstances are less than ideal.
Jamal’s creative process
For Jamal, the goal is not simply to sell clothing but to create something that encourages people to feel comfortable expressing themselves. Behind that feeling is a creative process that requires patience.
Depending on the piece, a design can take as little as a day to develop or as long as a year to reach completion. Jamal does not follow a ridged timeline to create new pieces.
Instead, he allows the design to develop until he feels it is ready to move forward.“Once I reach that point, I move into the technical side of the process, finalizing measurements and developing the tech pack to send to my manufacturers, Jamal says. “From there, they work to bring my vision to life.”
Despite the pressure of running a business, Jamal does not believe in rushing creativity simply to meet a deadline. “I’d rather give each piece the time it needs to reach its full potential,” he said.
Growing through the hard times
Jamal says a successful brand requires more than a good design or a desire to make money. It requires a meaningful purpose strong enough to withstand difficulty.
“People will tell you to stay consistent, never give up, be different and find your audience,”Jamal says. “While all of those things are important, I believe that if your ‘why’ is strong enough, those things will naturally follow because you have a reason to keep going, even when things get difficult.”
When reflecting on what he would have changed about his journey, Jamal initially joked that his answer would be to ‘stay out of a relationship.’
But his more serious answer revealed a broader outlook on life. “I believe a big part of life is learning to go with the flow and allowing yourself to grow through your experiences. I think we sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves to make the ‘right’ decisions or follow a specific path.”
“We grow up in an educational system that often teaches us to look for a right or wrong answer, but life doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes, the experiences that seem like mistakes end up teaching us the most valuable lessons.”

As he continues developing LaPhrēo, that purpose remains key to his work. What began with customizing shoes during his senior year of high school has grown into an ongoing pursuit of creative and personal expression.
His journey demonstrates that building a brand is not about producing clothing; it is about discovering what you stand for and finding ways to share that vision with others. Through LaPhrēo, Jamal is doing exactly that, one design at a time.
“Tomorrow could be the day you win. Don’t give up today.”
