Montevallo, ALA. — Orr Park is best known for the works of local artist Tim Tingle. The transformation began in 1993 when Tingle turned a storm damaged tree into a carving. He then gained permission from.
For over three decades, Tingle has turned the park into a unique outdoor gallery. Today, we are going to explore seven of the most beloved carvings that make Orr Park so special.
“Walking through the park is like walking through a gallery, I love seeing the carvings,”
Saadiq Mobley
1. The Welcoming Face

As one of the park’s most iconic sculptures, this carving is often the first that comes to mind for visitors.
Positioned right beside the entrance bridge, it has greeted guests since 2000.
This carving also greets people beyond the park, PokemonGO uses an image of this carving when showing Orr Park as a location.
Its playful face and detailed craftsmanship set a welcoming tone, and shows the work that went into the park.
2. The Stoic Lion

Carved into the cedar in 2011, this sculpture of a stoic lion is another crowd favorite.
Park visitor William Snuggs said, “I love seeing real animals here, and this carving is the next best thing.” Depicting the “king of the jungle,” the artwork stands as a fitting addition to the natural surroundings of the park.
3. The “Live Free” Veterans Memorial

Standing in the middle of one of the park’s open fields, the “Live Free” carving was created to honor the sacrifices of military veterans.
The sculpture serves as a strong reminder of the price paid for freedom by military members both living and passed. This statue inspires a deep sense of gratitude in those who visit.
Storm damage is what gave these carvings their life, and storm damage has also taken from them.
In 2020, a severe set of storms damaged this memorial carving, far beyond what could be recovered and the piece had to be retired and removed form the park.
The carving that sought to honor and remember the sacrifices of veterans will also be remembered for the message it shared.
4. The Forest Orchestra

As one of the more recent additions to the park, this band of carvings quickly captures the eye of passing visitors.
Rather than focusing on a single figure, it sets itself apart by harmonizing several smaller carvings as one orchestra.
“I like all the little carvings,” Saadiq Mobley said looking across the carvings, “I liked seeing the group get bigger each year,”.
Led by a central conductor, this whimsical little group offers a fun diorama and a unique piece, focusing on a group that grew over years instead of just one carving.
5. The Bird Family

Looking out toward Shoal Creek, this tender carving features a family of birds watching over the stream that separates the park from the road. It holds a special place in the hearts of parents.
As one mother, Diana Clark shared, “It’s my favorite,” she said, reflecting on her time at the park, “it’s a family living together,” reflecting her own experience in the park.
The sculpture beautifully mirrors the way families gather to explore and enjoy Orr Park.
6. The Watchful Gnome

Frequently mentioned by regular visitors, this gnome is full of personality. Facing out toward the stream, he playfully locks eyes with everyone who stops to watch him.
This charming creature adds a touch of fantasy and fun to the natural landscape, making it a memorable stop along the trail.
As the years wore on the gnome, he was put onto a concrete pedestal to further his tenure in the park.
7. The Eerie Tree Spirit

Perfect for the spooky season, this hauntingly detailed figure has captured the imagination of many visitors.
Located right along the paved pathway, it sits close enough to see the eerie expression and appreciates being a peculiar carving in the park.
These seven sculptures are just a fraction of the artistry found throughout Orr Park. Each carving was crafted with deep care by Tim Tingle, and every single one holds a special place in the park and to those who walk the trail.
Be sure to visit Orr Park anytime during daylight hours to explore these carvings and discover your own personal favorite!
