Warrior Park in Alabaster, Ala., was the setting of Bark in the Park on this past Saturday, on Oct. 5.
This year marked the 13th year of the event, organized by the non-profit animal rescue organization Shelby Humane to promote outdoor activities for people and pets, as well as various animal services around Shelby County.
Cassidy Poe, Shelby Humane’s external relations manager, said “This year, we reached out to several different dog trainers to put on different types of agility and training demonstrations.”
Activities included rides for kids, canine agility shows, and races for wiener dogs signed up by their owners.
At the center of the action was a promotion of dogs up for adoption at Shelby Humane. Several dogs were brought to and adopted at the event, where Shelby Humane employees and volunteers oversaw all activities and services at Bark in the Park.
The event culminated in a “nose work demonstration”, led by Shelby Humane volunteer coordinator Meredith Dempsey. The demonstration showed how quickly dogs can track down the location of their food through scent, then memorize that food source. In addition to pet dogs, adoptable dogs participated in this demonstration to promote their value and esteem as a potential pet.
