MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Students in the university’s ASL club hosted a sign language dinner at Sophie’s Kitchen in Montevallo on Thursday, April 16.

Students were welcome to join the club for dinner with the goal of making new friends and practicing ASL. About ten students gathered to eat southern food from Sophie’s Kitchen and celebrate a birthday with chocolate cake.

“I think it’s a great learning opportunity. It’s good for people to learn other languages so that people can communicate with others,” said one vistor who would like to remain anonymous.

Over the course of the dinner, the members of the club communciated mostly in sign language, stopping to speak aloud for one attendee who didn’t speak ASL. The club hosts other events such as their recent ASL expo that took place on April 14. More information can be found on their instagram, @montevallo_ASL.
