MONTEVALLO, Ala– The University of Montevallo Wind Ensemble closed its concert season with a performance that highlighted the group’s musical range, marking the ensemble’s final concert of the academic year.

Performing before a full audience, the ensemble delivered a program that showcased dynamic contrast across a variety of styles. From sustained lyrical passages to more rhythmically driven selections, the students demonstrated a high level of ensemble awareness, with clean entrances and a refined blend across sections.

The program also featured “Concerto for Trombone and Band,” highlighting soloist Jalaah Blue. Blue’s performance was a great demonstration of the versatility that can be found in UM musicians. Her tone remained full and centered across registers, while phrasing and articulation added clarity to the solo line. The ensemble provided a balanced accompaniment, allowing the Blue to stand out while maintaining cohesion with the group. The result was a polished performance.

The ensemble remained well aligned throughout the performance, with consistent balance across sections, reflecting the level of instruction and preparation emphasized within the University of Montevallo’s music department.

The program concluded with a medley from “A Chorus Line,” including the iconic “I Hope I Get It,” “What I Did for Love” and “One,” providing a fitting and energetic close to the ensemble’s final performance. The group maintained tight coordination throughout, with clean transitions and a clear sense of style.

Attention to detail remained consistent, with clear dynamics. Softer passages were controlled, while louder sections stayed full without losing clarity. Students maintained balance across textures, reinforcing the overall cohesion.

The concert also marked the final performance under director Joe Ardovino, who is retiring at the end of the semester. Known for fostering a sense of family within the music department, Ardovino emphasized that in his teaching. The ensemble’s performance reflected that approach, closing the season with a strong sense of unity and shared purpose.
